Tim and Katy Jo Zuidema, of Micanopy, Florida, know how to keep peace in a marriage. At the Appaloosa World Championship Show going on through Sunday in Fort Worth, Texas, the couple finished as Champion and Reserve Champion in the InStride Edition 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Class, presented by the Appaloosa Pleasure Horse Association.
Tim Zuidema rode Good Timin Charlie, a gelding sired by Colored By Charlie and out of Zip My Version to the World Championship title while Katy Jo Zuidema piloted Lookslikeallthecandy, sired by Chocolatey and out of Got Good Looks, to the Reserve honor.
Greg Wheat, Dan Williams, Linda Long and Rusty Green officiated over the class of 15 entries. Tim Zuidema and Good Timin Charlie, owned by David and Nettie Olsen, Waxhaw, North Carolina, were first on all four cards.
Tim Zuidema and Good Timin Charlie (Emmett) also won the World Show Sale 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Incentive Class on Thursday.
“Emmett has been a strong colt from the day he was born with so much natural ability,” Tim Zuidema says. “We knew Emmett was going to make a strong 2 year old but he’s going to make an even better 3-year-old, Zuidema said. “Watch for Emmett with owner Nettie Olsen in the Masters Western Pleasure and with Jessica Olsen in the 3-year-old Non-Pro Western Pleasure next year.”
Lookslikeallthecandy (Bruno) is owned by Tim and Katy Jo Zuidema.
“We haven’t owned Bruno that long,” says Katy Jo Zuidema. We just bought him at the Reichert Celebration in September. He gave me a great ride and to be first and second as husband and wife was definitely the icing on the cake for tonight.”
Katy Jo also earned a bonus for being the highest placing female rider in the class.
The Appaloosa Pleasure Horse Association was established in 1986 to promote Appaloosa pleasure horse, increase purses and create a marketplace for young horses. To date the association has awarded more than $1 million in cash and prizes through its programs and events. InStride Edition is the official publication of the Appaloosa Pleasure Horse Association.
Earlier in the day Wendy McCain, Tuscola, Texas, showed Designed To B Brunet to a win in the Non-Pro Western Yearling Longe Line class. Sired by Artfully Designed and out of Shocka Locka, Designed To B Brunet bested 14 other entries to record the win. They also placed third in the Open Western Longe Line, held on Thursday. A total of 18 yearlings competed in the open class. Sean Schembri showed Moonstruck Charlie, sired by Colored By Charlie and out of Smooth As Chocolate, to top honors for owner Cathleen Williams-Muzzey, Brandenton, Florida.
Also on Thursday, Powered By Diesel, owned by Hailey Berger, Parkland, Florida, won the World Show Sale 2-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle with Katy Jo Zuidema in the irons. Powered By Diesel is sired by Diesel Only and out of All Elegance. Jesse Jones and Play It Again Hunter won the Open Senior Hunter Under saddle for owner Katie Shepherd, of Norwell, Massachusetts. Jessica Olsen rode Sleepin N Paradise to a win in the Non-Pro Western Pleasure class of 19 entries.
On Wednesday Mark Shaffer, Tioga, Texas, recorded a big win in the Open 3-Year-Old Western Pleasure aboard Choc Out My Assets. Sired by Choc Full Of Chips and out of Freeze My Asset, Choc Out My Assets is owned by Mckenzie Gee, of Stafford, Kansas. A total of 23 entries competed in the Non-Pro Masters Western Pleasure and Big Time Money, owned and shown by David Beck, Beck Farms, Stockton, California, took home top honors. In the 3-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Hunter Under Saddle class, Handsoffmyartifacts returned to capture another World Show title with Beth Case in the irons. Owned by Megan Wagner, Pilot Pont, Texas, Handsoffmyartifacts is sired by All Hands On Zip and out of Miss Artifactual. Wednesday’s schedule also featured the Non-Pro Hunter Yearling Longe Line, drawing 12 contestants. Jessica Olsen showed Hand Over The Blue, sired by All Hands On Zip and out of Fifty Two In A Row, to the win.
Anthony Leier showed Hand Over The Blue to a win in the Open Hunter Yearling Longe Line on Tuesday. A total of 15 yearlings competed in the class. Also on Tuesday, Katie Fasano, of Adel, Iowa, rode Chipped N Paradise to a win in the Novice Western Pleasure. Lisa Ligon and Two Timin Chip, owned by Patti Kanegae, East Wenatchee, Washington, won the Junior Western Riding while Randi Yocum, of Fayetteville, Texas bested nine other teams to capture the top prize in the Non-Pro Masters Western Riding aboard Cowgirls Miracle, sired by The Miracle Chip and out of Zippin Cowgirl. Sara Simons rode Rock My Motion to a win in the Ladies’ Western Pleasure. Sired by Hot Chocolate Chip and out of Shes Radical, Rock My Motion is owned by Janis and Jordan Semmelmayer, of Corona Del Mar, California.
Monday’s action got started with Non-Pro Western Riding where Resurrected Zip MMR teamed with Tristanna Bickford to mark a 217, earning them a win in the class. Later in the day Rock My Machine won the Masters Hunter Under Saddle with Tammy Rack, New Prague, Minnesota, in the irons. Rock My Machine is sire by A Good Machine and out of Tonya Star. Mark Shaffer won the Men’s Western Pleasure aboard his own horse, Impulsive Angel, sired by Impulsive Zipper and out of Im With Charlie. Robery Menelly teamed with Heza Classy Charlie to win the Senior Western Riding with a score of 222.5. Owned by David and Nettie Olsen, Heza Classy Charlie is sired by Colored By Charlie and out of Classy Lady Zippo. Lisa Ligdon then piloted ZZ Top Hat N Tails to a win in the Junior Hunter Under Saddle for Curtis and Priscilla Barnes, of Galatia, Illinois.
Working classes like Roping, Heeling and Daubing dominated the Sunday morning schedule. Afterwards Totally Paradise and Nancy Parkinson teamed to record a win in the Masters Trail with a score of 360. Holly Anderson, of Meshoppen, Pennsylvania, and Charlie Doolin then won the Novice Trail.
A total of 41 competed for top honors in Senior Trail. Heath Wilkerson and Enchanted Paradise marked a 331 to capture the win for owners Gary and Vicki Gernhardt, of La Plata, Maryland. Enchanted Paradise is sired by Zip’n To Paradise and out of All Elegance. Dale Sullens and A Chip Of Sudden teamed to win the Junior Trail in a tough class of 15. Sired by Suddenly A Sonny and out of Zips Sugar Cookie, A Chip Of Sudden is owned by Audrey Swanson, Lucas, Texas. “He warmed up great and I could not have asked for him to show any better for me,” Sullens said. Jessica Olsen piloted Heza Classy Charlie to a win in the Non-Pro Trail, besting 22 other horse and rider teams.
Kicking the week off with the first World Championship title last Sunday was Mason Lyon riding Secondhandinvestment (Invy) for owners Jennifer Hulcher and Brooke Bancroft, of Argyle, Texas, in Pre-Green Working Hunter. Lyon and Secondhandinvestment continued their winning streak capturing four World Champion titles all on the first day of the show.
“Invy is a big horse with a lot of personality who loves to jump,” Hulcher says.
Saturday night the Appaloosa Association honored the American Cancer Society with The Think Pink Calcutta Nez Perce Stake Race. A live Calcutta was featured before the class started so the audience could bid and buy their winners. Crowd favorite, Todd Towe, of Franklin, Kentucky, recorded the fastest time aboard Spotted Chexs Alias, raising $2,900 for Breast Cancer Awareness.
The World Championship Appaloosa Show concludes today with competition centered around Halter, Novice Hunter Under saddle, Non-Pro Youth All-Ages Western Pleasure, and then the the Open 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure followed by Non-Pro 35 & Over Western Pleasure and Novice Hunt Seat Equitation.
