InStride Edition magazine Publisher F. Bradley Borton, 60, of Upper Deerfield Township, N.J. passed away on Monday, April 30, at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Philadelphia, after a long and courageous battle against cancer.
Brad was introduced to show horses by his wife of 37 years, Corrine (Sheppard), and quickly became immersed in raising and exhibiting American Quarter Horses. He was especially fond of working with young prospects himself, preparing yearlings for Longe Line competition. Brad has been on the Top 10 Leading Non-Pro Longe Line exhibitors list for the National Snaffle Bit Association for over a decade having won the Tom Powers, Southern Belle Invitation, Reichert Celebration, NSBA’s Breeders Championship and many state futurities and he was Top 10 at the Quarter Horse Congress numerous times. He also served on the NSBA’s Longe Line Committee, charged with the restructuring of the judging of the class.
Brad was born in Salem, Illinois, raised in Paducah, Kentucky and was a longtime Upper Deerfield Township, New Jersey resident. He was the son of the late Robert and Dorothy (Carlock) Borton.
Brad was a 1975 graduate of Paducah Tilghman High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with an Area in Marketing and a minor in Advertising from Murray State University in Kentucky in 1979. He was marketing manager or advertising director of weekly and daily newspapers in Kentucky, Tennessee and New Jersey and worked for some of the nation’s largest newspaper chains, including Gannett Inc., American Publishing Co., and Dear Publications. While working in newspaper advertising he won numerous sales and design awards from both the Kentucky and New Jersey press associations.
In 1993, Brad left newspapers to establish The Borton Agency, a full-service advertising and public relations firm with clients ranging from trailer companies to grocery stores. That same year, he and Corrine introduced Today’s Horse, a multi-disciplined monthly newsmagazine serving the Delaware Valley. From 2000 to 2013 Brad served as publisher of The Way to Go magazine, official publication of the NSBA. In 2013, he launched InStride Edition Magazine, a leading international print and digital magazine covering the stock horse show industry.
An avid University of Kentucky Basketball fan, Brad enjoyed all sports. He was a competitive water skier, bass fisherman, snow skier, played golf and was a founding Philadelphia Union season ticket holder. But he most enjoyed supporting his children as they pursued their passions in equestrian competition, football, baseball, golf, tennis and especially soccer, having coached a developmental soccer team at the Cohansey Soccer Club in Upper Deerfield.
In addition to his wife, Brad is survived by a daughter, Courtney (Jonathan) Ament, Huntersville, North Carolina; sons, Brad Jr., Upper Deerfield Township and Brent, Washington, DC; two brothers, Robert (Donna) Borton, Pana, Illinois and William (Becky) Borton, Benton, Kentucky. He is also survived by Tyler (Tiffany) Ale, Herber City, Utah, who he thought of as a son; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Brad’s Life will be held from 1 to 4 pm, Sunday, May 6, at the Greenview Inn at Eastlyn Golf Club, 4049 Italia Ave., Vineland, N.J. The family will also hold a memorial service in Kentucky in June.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Brad Borton Memorial Fund. Proceeds will be used to fund causes for which Brad was passionate. He was especially determined to encourage new show competitors and specifically, individuals who love to prepare their own Longe Liners so the first will be the Brad Borton Memorial Longe Line Awards to be presented to the highest placing Limited Non-Pro exhibitors in the Non-Pro Longe Line classes at the 2018 Tom Powers Futurity, one of his favorite shows. Details will be announced as soon as they are finalized via InStride Edition.com and the Tom Powers Futurity.
