Ohio’s Bailey Farm, a place where pedigrees are built

bailey_farm_f&cBecky Bailey has been at the helm of Bailey Farm in Batavia, Ohio since she and husband, Craig, bought a soybean field in 1999 and turned it into a full-fledged breeding facility, focusing on superior pedigree.

Bailey was introduced to horses at a young age, spending her summers trail riding with her family. When her daughter, Jessica, wanted a horse of her own, the family entered the industry without hesitation. After being in the Quarter Horse circuit for a few years, Bailey took an inventory and realized she had six horses in training and two of them were in foal.

“I thought, ‘We better get a place,’” she says.

It was perfect timing for the family

“The kids were young and I wanted them to experience what life was like outside the city because we had always lived in a subdivision,” Bailey explains. “I wanted them to be outdoors with fresh air and learn what hard work is.”

Once the field was bought and the barn built, Bailey started collecting broodmares. Her first stop was the dam of her futurity horse, Krymsun Hot Invite, a 1998 mare by Invitation Only and out of Krymsun Jet Set. It took Bailey six months to hunt down and buy Krymsun Jet Set, but when she finally did it, it was sight unseen. She followed her gut.

When they opened the trailer to deliver the mare, Bailey noticed her yearling and was instantly in love.

“I just had to have him too,” she says.

Baileys&Jet_0257That “him” was future 2001 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Open 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure World Champion, 2002 AQHA Open Junior Western Pleasure World Champion,2005 AQHA Open Senior Western Pleasure World Champion, and winner of Congress titles in both the Western Pleasure and Western Riding, One Hot Krymsun, a 1999 stallion by Invitation Only.

She made him her star.

“Jet” now has lifetime earnings of $66,680 and 75.5 points. He’s sired 981 AQHA foals, racking up over a $1,200,000 in earnings, 19,000 AQHA points in 13 events.

He has an AQHA Superhorse on the ground and in all his foals have earned 118 World and Reserve World Championships in AQHA, APHA, ApHC, IBHA, ABRA, PtHA and NSBA. Some of his notable offspring include VS Check My Pulse, AQHA World Champion 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure; Blazing Krymsun, Congress Champion Novice Amateur Western Pleasure; HF Tahnee Too, AQHYA Horsemanship World Champion; HF Bentley, AQHA World Champion in Amateur Showmanship; Miss Krymsun Kash, Select Amateur World Champion in Performance Halter Mares; Cool Krymsun Lady, two time World Champion in Open Western Pleasure, Select Amateur World Champion Halter Performance Mares and multiple Congress Champion in multiple events; Theres Only One, Appaloosa World Champion in the Western Riding; Krymsun Truffle, National Snaffle Bit Association World Champion in Green Western Pleasure; and Krymsuns Affair, International German Champion in Green Hunter Under Saddle and Reserve Champion in Junior Hunter Under Saddle.

Bailey herself has enjoyed promoting Jet with her personal accomplishments on his daughter, Ona Hot Summer Night, a 4-year-old mare out of Ona Impulse. At this year’s AQHA Select World, the two were Reserve World Champions in Performance Halter Mares and third place in Western Pleasure.

Irish_PHS_Congress_scannedNow, Bailey is introducing Jet’s half-brother, a 4-year-old red roan stallion by Zippos Mr Good Bar and out of Krymsun Jet Set, Red White and Good, to the world.

“Irish is just building his show record now,” she says.

But he’s already showing his stripes with his appearance at the 2013 Ohio Quarter Horse Congress. He was third with trainer Brad Pitts, of P5 Equestrian, Evansville, Indiana, in the Limited Open Performance Halter Stallions.

“He really is a natural athlete. He’s very talented and has a fluid way of moving, along with a great lead change,” says Pitts. “But all of that starts with good conformation. That’s important in all horses but especially in a breeding horse. He really has everything you’re looking for in a stallion; conformation, athletic ability, disposition, and pedigree.”

The inspiration behind Irish was his full sister Good Luck Girl, who was the Congress Masters Western Pleasure winner back in 2007.

“I wanted a stallion by that same cross. I bred Krymsun Jet Set to Good Bar a number of times and only got one boy, which was Irish,” she says. “I believed the pleasure horse world would benefit from an upcoming son of Good Bar out of this great mare.”

Bailey saw him and knew he had promise. She made the decision to keep him a stallion.

“He was a freakier mover than Good Luck Girl,” she says.

Arne Kuhn and Krymsun Affair Europe2Irish is currently with Pitts, who has a full show career planned for the future sire. The team is planning to show him in Western Riding in the next couple of months and to eventually get his AQHA Championship. Bailey is even planning to take him to the Select World in 2014 and show him in the Performance Halter and possibly a performance event.

Now, the stud is preparing for his first breeding season in 2014.

“We’ve had lots of interest in him at and after the Congress with people wanting to breed their mares, so that was very exciting,” says Bailey. “We’re very pleased with the response.”
