There’s a fundamental difference between a stallion and a sire. True horsemen understand that.
World Champion trainer Cleve Wells gets it. So does Kim Dean, who has been managing AQHA sires for decades now. And Aaron Moses, a 13-time Quarter Horse Congress Champion and AQHA and NSBA World Champion and his wife, top Non-Pro rider Courtney Moses, can differentiate between the two.
LL Cool Bay is a sire … trust them.
He has the pedigree. His sire is the AQHA Hall of Fame Stallion, A Good Machine. His dam, Zippo Erin, is a Reserve World Champion and a multiple Congress Champion and Reserve Champion.
He has the show record, logging $6,500 in earnings and a top 10 in the Congress Masters 2-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure.
And although he only has 70 foals on the ground, many not yet old enough to ride, his offspring have already earned AQHA and AQHYA World and Reserve World Championships, as well as multiple Congress and NSBA Championship and Reserve Championship titles.
In 2020 IsThatCoolWithYou, a bay gelding out of Shez Lopin Lazy, was the AQHA World Champion in the 2-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure and won the 2-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure and the Breeders Championship Futurity (BCF) 2-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure at the NSBA World Show. He was also Reserve Champion in the 2-Year-Old Open and Intermediate Open Non-Pro Western Pleasure at the NSBA World Show and won classes at the Arizona Fall Classic and Tom Powers Futurity.
Cool Poco Dot, a sorrel mare out of Poco Jina Jane, has been shown successfully both by Linda Ball Sargent and Brody Galyean. She is a Level 1 and Level 2 AQHYA World Champion, NSBA World Champion and Congress Champion.
Too Legit To Quit, a bay gelding out of My My Sheik, was Reserve Champion in Level 1 Youth Western Pleasure 14-18 at the 2018 Quarter Horse Congress.
Kim Dean has been a big fan of LL Cool Bay for a good while now.
For years she stood his sire, A Good Machine and she stood LL Cool Bay for former owners, Chip and Jennifer Crane, right after A Good Machine died and at the same time she stood Machine Made.
“I watched Aaron and Courtney show IsThatCoolWithYou at the NSBA World Show in August of 2020 and he looked amazing,” she recalled. “I had heard that Cool Bay’s owners were getting out of the horse business and were thinking about selling him. My heart skipped a beat as I considered purchasing him myself.”
Whenever Dean has big decisions to make in the horse business, she always uses Cleve Wells as her sounding board and the voice of reason.
“Cleve knew Cool Bay well as he had trained him as well as several of his babies. He and I both agreed that Cool Bay was already a sire (not just a stallion), but we knew it would be difficult for me to promote him on my own without a Western Pleasure trainer in the equation. Aaron and Courtney were also thinking about buying him, as were a few others. I thought there would be no couple better than those two to own and promote him.”
So Dean stepped aside and that’s when fate stepped in.
“A few days after that decision, I was having lunch when my phone rang and it was Aaron’s name on the screen,” Dean said. “When I answered, we chatted for a few minutes and then he asked if I would consider partnering with him and Courtney on Cool Bay. It didn’t take but a second for me to say YES! For me, that was one of the best days ever.”
Aaron Moses said he had ridden a handful of LL Cool Bay offspring over the years and was showing IsThatCoolWithYou when Wells told him that the stallion was for sale. He and Courtney reached out to the owners and they were able to purchase him in 2021.
“We feel that he sires very good minded, trainable horses with size and structure,” Aaron said. “He sires horses that are mentally and physically able to be successful pleasure horses and then are able to go on and be successful in other events.”
Dean agrees and says that not only is LL Cool Bay a great mover, he is also great minded and he passes that on to his babies.
“You can breed a tough-minded mare to him and Cool Bay will cool her off,” she explained. “His offspring can jog and like the typical A Good Machine son, he passes that deep hock on to his babies. He’s a tad over 15’3, has four little white feet and he carries the APHA Dominate white (W20) gene which is perfect if you’re breeding a double registered AQHA/APHA mare.”
In addition to knowing exactly what LL Cool Bay is all about, Dean is also very familiar with his family.
“Very rarely, do people get a chance to own a great sire like A Good Machine – he was a once in a lifetime horse and I was so very lucky to be a part of his journey,” she said. “It truly feels like lightening has struck twice for me in getting to be a part of LL Cool Bay’s life. He’s a lot like his daddy in that the babies are great minded and are talented enough to do events other than just Western Pleasure.”
The added value, Dean said, is appealing to youth and amateur competitors looking for show partners that will have longevity in the show pen as they continue their careers by adding Trail and Western Riding events.
Courtney and Aaron are looking forward to the 2022 foals, now starting to arrive as they will be the first since their purchase of LL Cool Bay.
“We wanted to be able to have more offspring by him,” Aaron said.
Dean, is happy to have LL Cool Bay as one of the highly-decorated members of her The Breeding Barn, located at Brightstone Ranch, Bob Perry’s previous facility in Valley View, Texas, where Zippo Pine Bar, Zips Chocolate Chip and many others stood. The facility is owned by Keith Feister who also serves as breeding manager.
“Keith has been in the business of collecting stallions for about 40 years,” Dean said. “He has been the breeding manager for some of the top stallions in the industry including, Blazing Hot, Batt Man, Extremely Hot Chips and all of Terry Bradshaw’s halter stallions.”
Dean provides full breeding services from the beginning in training a stud to collect, to stallion collection (through Feister) to the end in sending out registration applications after the foal is born.
“I take all phone calls from mare owners concerning which stallions to breed to, send out contracts on all of the stallions I work with and answer every phone call for shipped semen orders, prepare stallion breeding reports, etc.” she said.
LL Cool Bay’s 2022 stud fee is $1,750 and the only other fee is for shipped semen.
“Even though he booked full in 2021 we are keeping his 2022 stud fee the same as last year. We want to keep the fee affordable for ALL mare owners,” Dean said. “We will continue to give additional discounts to our previous breeders, discounts to World/Reserve World Champions and producers of the same as well as giving discounts for those breeding multiple mares.”
The biggest discounts will still go to the trainers.
“We know as soon as they get to ride one, they will be our best advertisers of how talented the Cool Bays are,” Dean said.
