Allocate Your Assets is passing on his great stride and great mind

AYA HeadshotAL take you on the ride of a lifetime may have been what Allocate Your Assets, “Al,” a 2000 Bay Stallion by Protect Your Assets out of Kat Sass (TB), silently told trainers Jim and Deanna Searles the first time they saw him one day at the 2002 Red Bud Spectacular. Having bought Al sight unseen, there was no way that owners G.W. and Katherine Tobin of Scottsdale, Arizona could know that their fancy moving prospect would one day significantly impact the Quarter Horse industry by becoming one of the leading Hunter Under Saddle sires who has consistently proved to pass on his great strides as well as great mind.

“Deanna and my sister, Susie Johns, saw Brian Isabell riding Al around. His trot and canter were breathtaking. Deanna stopped Brian right then and asked if Al was for sale and I believe she rode him right then too,” Katherine Tobin says. “Since Susie didn’t ride hunt seat, although Al was so beautiful she almost decided to try it, I was next in line. Brian finally agreed to sell him in July of 2002. It was because Al could float at the trot and canter with a flat knee and deep hock that made him so special!”

Deanna recalls the day she first saw Al and admits she also had no idea he would be such a great breeding horse.

“You never know. He had the movement, the looks, the mind, the disposition and  the breeding we liked but you never really know if a stallion will breed well until they get started,” Searles says. “It just worked out!”

That year won several big summer futurities like the Southern Belle and Kentucky Futurity. He finished out the year winning the 2 Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle Futurity at the Quarter Horse Congress and was the NSBA High Point Champion in 2-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle with championships in both the gold and silver divisions at the Congress that year.

Allocate In Blue“We brought him home to Scottsdale and he hurt himself right before the Sun Circuit so we didn’t show him until the Scottsdale Fall Classic where he and I won the 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle Futurity,” Tobin says. “ As a 4-year-old, I showed him to a third place finish at the AQHA Amateur Select World Show in Hunter Under Saddle where I picked up the wrong lead in front of a couple of the judges but still hung in for third in the World!”

The same year, Al also went on to win circuit championships in Junior Hunter Under Saddle at some of the nation’s largest shows like the Arizona Sun Circuit, Silver Dollar Circuit, Scottsdale Classic, and Oregon Summer Classic finishing with superiors in both Open and Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and a Top-Ten finish in Junior Hunter Under Saddle at the AQHA World Show.

“We showed him through to his 6-year-old year where he won the Quarter Horse Congress in Senior Hunter Under Saddle and the next month won a Reserve World Championship in Senior Hunter Under Saddle with Sue Ellen Vickery. He was then retired to stud,” Tobin says. “Again it wasn’t his pedigree as much as it was his fabulous movement at the trot and the canter that wowed us so!”

qy13-9539-tobin released-1With his oldest foals turning eight this year, Al has already become a leading sire of Hunter Under Saddle horses with multiple AQHA World, Congress, and NSBA World Champions. He was also named the 2011 Equistat Number 1 Hunter Under Saddle Stallion.

“His foals have so much ability and the trainers love to have them,” Searles says. “We try to get them into the best hands we can.”

Last year alone, Al sired four of the top-10 finishers in the Masters Hunter Under Saddle Futurity at the Quarter Horse Congress with Al Be Desirable owned by Patricia Hunter and shown by Nancy Sue Ryan winning the class. Al Be Seeing Ya owned and shown by Beth Case finished third, Blameitonthealcohol, owned and shown by Deanna Searles finished fifth, and Al the Right Moves owned by Nika Vilcins and shown by Kristy Starnes finished seventh. Allocate In Blue owned and shown by Courtney Suzanne Brockmueller was crowned the 2013 World Champion in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and Lyles Al Lie owned and shown by Kirsten Farris won another world championship at the 2013 AQHA Select Amateur World Show in Hunter Under Saddle. Al’s foals have consistently proved through the years that their great minds enable them to be exceptional young show horses as well as fit for non-pro competitors later in their show careers.

1713-4178Al is also proving to cross well on western-bred broodmares and his babies are branching out into all-around events as well. In fact, one of Al’s big stars, Al Be Sweet On You from his first foal crop is out of Sweet Talkin Barbie by Sweet Talkin Chip. Searles explains that most of Al’s hunt seat foals can jog well too, which make them perfect candidates to become all-around horses and excel in a variety of other events including Trail, Western Riding, and Horsemanship.

“Al has an All-Around Champion, Al Be Sweet On You, who was the 2011 Congress Champion in 11& Under Hunter Under Saddle and has multiple Top-10 Congress finishes in 13& Under Western Riding. This horse took youth, Taylor Searles, at only 13 years old to the finals at the AQHYA World Show in Equitation,” Tobin says. “Taylor also showed She Says Aloha who was only a 3-year-old to a seventh place at the AQHYA World Show in Hunter Under Saddle.”

The list goes on and on but some other notable Al’s include: Beautiful Maiden,  the 2012 AQHA World Champion in Junior Hunter Under Saddle, Al Wana Be First, who is a NSBA World Champion with earnings in excess of $25,000, Resurrection, a 2011 Congress Champion in Progressive Working Hunter and Junior Hunter Hack, Al I Want Is You, who has won over $18,000 in NSBA earnings, Lastcallfouralcohol, the 2011 Masters Hunter Under Saddle Champion, Al Be Graceful, a European World Champion in Junior Hunter Under Saddle and the International Highpoint Amateur Hunter Under Saddle horse, Always Right, the West Coast Champion in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle, and Reachinforyourassets, the Region One Champion in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle.

Lyles A LieIn fact just last month at the Arizona Sun Circuit, Al’s offspring finished on top again with Al Be Desirable and Deanna Searles winning the NSBA 3-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle Futurity and Blameitonthealcohol and Beth Case finishing Reserve Champion in the class. Taylor Searles and Blameitonthealcohol were also crowned the NSBA 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle Futurity Champion.

Al currently stands in Scottsdale under the guidance of breeding manager, Jim Searles and assistant breeding manager, Chelsea Carlson for a 2014 Breeding Fee of $2,000. Although Al is the first stallion the Searles have had to stand, he has made their breeding experience a positive one.

“He is very easy to stand. He has great manners and is so quiet,” Searles says. “His semen also ships great and he is easy to collect. I want to personally thank all the mare owners who have believed in him.”

Searles and Tobin are excited about another great breeding year for Al and are looking forward to his up-and-coming foals. Searles also has for sale many great weanling, yearling and 2-year-old prospects ready to go out and make more winners for Al.

“We were hoping he would pass down his great mind as well as his beautiful trot and canter and he has surpassed himself as a show horse,” Tobin says. “We just keep marveling at no matter what the mare’s breeding, Al has crossed with them all passing down his great strides with great minds.”
