Trail LineIt took a score of 222 or higher to make it back to this year’s Amateur Trail finals, held Monday at the AQHA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City, and the top 15 riders battled it out in a challenging Tim Kimura trail course.

The course kept the riders and horses on their toes with lots of transitions, tight turns and eye-catching decorations. Judges for the Trail finals were: John Dean, Kelly McDowall, Laurel Walker-Denton, Karen Watters and Sissy Anderson.

Angela Wade and One Hot Drama Mama (aka Peaches) marked a 231 to capture the gold trophy and neck ribbon. Wade trains and shows with Patty Vatterott of Wellington, Florida.

“Peaches can be very difficult at times but I feel like every time I show her we get better and better,” Wade says. “I feel like the most challenging part of the course today was the lope out of the back thru to the stop and spin.”

Angela WadeCurrently Wade and One Hot Drama Mama, a 2007 bay mare by One Hot Krymsun, only compete in Trail but Wade hopes to add Horsemanship next year. She also showed Huntin Big Dreams in Amateur Western Pleasure later on Monday, advancing to the finals, which will be held tonight.

Fon Laughlin, of Little Elm, Texas, teamed with Zip Along a Home (aka Homer) to mark a 229 and take home a Reserve Championship.

“I have been coming to the World Show for 10 years and this was my first year to make the finals. I think I’m still in shock,” Laughlin said. “I could not have asked Homer to be any better for me today, he was extra careful with his feet.”

Lauglin and Homer will also compete in the Amateur Western Riding finals tonight.
