20140615-193115-70275714.jpgTommy Sheets of New Albany, Indiana got things started at A Little Futurity this morning by winning the Green Trail class aboard Dont I Look Good, owned by Sarah Maggart of Paris, Illinois. Eight horses negotiated the obstacles designed for competitors just starting their careers in Trail.

Elizabeth Bohn, of Layton, North Carolina, won the Non-Pro Trail class on her red roan gelding, You Bet Im Sumthin. Bohn bested four other non-pro competitors to score the victory.

Veteran Trail competitor Cheryl Hawkins, of Ocala, Florida, rode Randy Kimmel’s stallion, Best In The Dark to a win in the seven-entry Open Trail. Randy and his wife, Jane, just hosted their daughter, Annelise’s, wedding to John Woodward, at their Covington, Ohio home On June 7, so the family has a lot to celebrate.

“My favorite part of the Little Futurity is that is falls in between two horse shows,” Hawkins says. “He (Larry Little) offers a diversified number of classes that you can enter.”

Action then moved into the Western Riding arena where Carmen Moss piloted Pleasure Do N Biznus to a win in Green Western Riding, for owner Mary Goos.

Darcy Reeve and A Certain Vino won the Open Western Riding to finish things up Sunday.

This marks the first time A Little Futurity has held the Trail and Western Riding classes on Sunday.

“I think exhibitors liked this schedule because it allowed them to get their pattern horses out of the way today and now they can focus on the pleasure events,” says Gale Little.

The first of the A Little Futurity classes were held in conjunction with the Tar Heel Triple Classic AQHA Circuit, which has been presented by the North Carolina Quarter Horse Association Youth Association this weekend at the James B. Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh. The futurity is nestled between the Tar Heel Classic and the Jamboree AQHA Circuit, sponsored by the North Carolina Quarter Horse Association after the futurity.

Tomorrow a full slate of Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle classes for Open, Non-Pro and Youth riders of various divisions will be featured in the picturesque outdoor arena. Novice Youth Western Pleasure is the first class of the day on Monday and competition will culminate with the presentation of the $25,000 added 3 & 4-Year-Old Novice Horse Western Pleasure Slot Class, sponsored by Southern Oaks Farm and Peak and Virginia Owen.

Judges for this year’s futurity are: Milt Alderman, Brett Clark, John Dean and Betsy Tuckey.
