image-4For 27-year-old Dave Archer, the best thing about being a horse trainer is that no two days are the same.

“Every day is a new adventure with the horses,” he says, “and I learn something new every day.”

Archer specializes in the training and preparation of Western Pleasure horses, futurity prospects and the western all-around contender.

He already has an impressive resume, having trained such successful horses as 2011 Reichert Color Classic Limited and Open 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Champion Touched In Moonlite; UF A Certain Star, National Snaffle Bit Association World Champion Limited Non-Pro 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Champion (with his wife, Courtney);  2-Year-Old Appaloosa Western Pleasure World Champion Oh My Chocolately; Two-time Appaloosa World and National Open and Non-Pro Western Pleasure Champion Pedal Pusher and A Good N Hot Machine, NSBA Intermediate Open Western Pleasure Maturity.

Archer says that at the center of his program is his belief that there are no two horses alike and so every horse is ridden with its own individuality in mind.

“I let them all show me what they can and can’t handle,” he explains.

Born in Peterborough, Ontario Canada, Archer attended school in nearby Noorwood, and played on a traveling ice hockey team throughout elementary and high school.

“I’ve had horses for as far back as I can remember,” he explains. “It started out as something fun for my family to do together but the second I received my first blue ribbon I was hooked and I haven’t looked back since.”

Archer spent some time working for Tim Zuidema in Florida before moving to Texas to work with Rusty Green.

“Both programs, at the time, had so much to offer me and I learned so much from Tim and Rusty,” he says. “I feel privileged to have worked with two of the best Western Pleasure trainers in this industry.”

In 2010 he established Dave Archer Show Horses in Pilot Point, Texas, working out of Manor House Ranch, owned by close family friends, Brian and Dena Raggio.

image-11While attending a barbecue at the home of Sharnai Thompson, Archer met Courtney Branson and the two began dating.

“We got married May 5, 2012, in Los Cabos, Mexico surrounded by the people who truly mean the most to us,” he says. “It was perfect from beginning to end.”

Recently the Archers purchased their own place, a 12-acre ranch in Pilot Point, Texas, that includes three barns totaling 41 stalls , a 200-by- 120 outdoor riding arena, a 60-foot round pen, a large pasture, two large turnouts and three smaller turnouts.

From there Archer coaches youth, amateur and select amateur competitors.

“They all definitely keep me on my toes,” he admits. “The best reward for me is seeing one of my clients accomplish a goal with their horse in and out of the show pen.”

When he’s not riding, Archer enjoys playing golf.

“I’m not very good at it and I rarely have time to play but every chance I get you can find me on the golf course,” he says. “I love spending quality time with my wife no matter what we’re doing as long as we’re together I’m happy. At the end of a long hot summer day you can always find me just floating around in the pool relaxing.”

Archer is a member of the AQHA, ApHC and NSBA.
