Extremely Hot Chips

To his owner, Russ Louderback, Extremely Hot Chips is bigger than life. So much so that when the Executive Vice President of White Lodging, a large hotel owner/developer from Northwest Indiana, was selected to grace the cover of Hotel Business Design recently, he opted for a photograph of himself aboard the 2006 chestnut Quarter Horse stallion rather than alongside one of his towering buildings.

“That still makes a lot of people smile,” Louderback says.

Extremely Hot Chips, sired by Blazing Hot and out of Miss Trophy Chip (by Zips Chocolate Chip), makes Louderback smile every day.

“How many stallions do you see walking around (the Quarter Horse) Congress – still showing and placing in the Top 10 after breeding 70 mares per year?” he asked. “None that I know of.”

Extremely Hot Chips made his show debut by placing fourth in the Reichert Celebration 2-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure Challenge. In 2009 he won the Limited Division of the 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure with Cheryl Mullikin aboard; was Reserve Champion of the Limited Division of the 3-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure Derby and placed third in the Open Division. Later that year he placed third in Junior Western Pleasure at the American Quarter Horse Association’s World Show. Since then he has won numerous National Snaffle Bit Association World Championship titles and futurity wins. He has a total of 221 Open and Amateur Western Pleasure points and over $84,000 in earnings.

But even more impressive to Louderback is the fact that Extremely Hot Chip foals are making just as impressive a mark in the show industry, while their sire is still showing successfully. Just last year Extremely Hot Chips foals won both the Open and Limited divisions of the Congress Masters 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure (Extremely Late and Jay Starnes in the Open and Daddy Doesnt Know with Brian Baker in the Limited) while their sire placed in the Top 10 of the Limited Western Pleasure with Nick Mayabb and in the Amateur Western Pleasure with Louderback.

“Nick had only ridden Chip about a month before the Congress so that’s pretty amazing to me,” Louderback said. “There is good competition out there for stallions but I would put Chip up against any.”

It was that great mentality that attracted Louderback to Extremely Hot Chips to start with.

“In 2012 I was looking for a stallion and made a strong offer on a few younger stallions that were not accepted – I thank God for that every day.”

At the time Louderback was working with trainer Chris Jones, of Indiana, who suggested taking a shot at Extremely Hot Chips.

“Chris and I went to see him and he is the most handsome devil on the face of the earth,” Louderback recalled. “He is so well mannered and anyone can ride him. He knows his job in the breeding barn and then can switch to ‘gelding like’ when riding. I have never seen anything like it.”

And Louderback has seen a lot of horses in his time. In fact, he was born into a home with horses.

Growing up in Wilmington, Ohio, Louderback competed as a youth with a buckskin named Dun Hank, who, in his eyes, could do everything, Pleasure, Horsemanship, Reining and a great trail rider. Because of his success and relationship with Dun Hank, he never lost the desire to ride horses and said had he not had such a great experience with him he likely would not be still involved with horses today.

“My dad wanted us to do everything ourselves – which I still appreciate,” he said. “I wish he could be here today to see Extremely Hot Chips go around.”

Following high school, Louderback attended the University of Tennessee, earning a bachelor of arts degree in Architecture. He was working for Turner Construction when he met his wife, Leigh Ann, then the district manager of the Florence Mall in Kentucky.

“My company damaged the store front to one of her stores (which I denied of course) and we argued for six months,” Louderback recalled. “Finally one day (she hated me) I called and told her if she would have lunch with me I would fix her store. And I have been working for her ever since.”

They have been married for 20 years and have four children: Dustin, also an architect; Lacee, an attorney; Savannah, a Marine Science major at Florida Gulf Coast University; and Mason, an eighth-grade student who enjoys basketball, golf and fishing. They also have two grandchildren, Layden and Hutch.

The Louderbacks’ daughter, Savannah, also enjoyed riding and competing. Teamed with Xtreme Krymsun, she won a Congress Reserve Championship in Youth Trail. She also placed in the Top Five in Youth Western Pleasure aboard Tootsee Roll, a 2008 bay mare by RL Best Of Sudden and out of Brandys Silver Sheik. Louderback purchased Tootsee Roll through Bret Parrish, just after they placed third in the Masters 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure. The following year, Tootsee Roll and Wade Parks enjoyed tremendous success in 3-Year-Old events. Savannah also had the opportunity to show Forever My Lady, a 2010 sorrel mare by RL Best Of Sudden and out of Forever A Zippo.  Teamed with Kenny Lakins, Forever My Zippo captured a Reserve Congress Championship in Junior Western Pleasure in 2014.

Louderback still owns Tootsee Roll and A Cooki For Certain, the dam of Congress and World Champion Whatscookngoodlookn, who was his first real show horse. Both are now broodmares at Louderback Ranch, a 70-acre facility in Pendleton, Indiana, that includes a large barn and indoor arena. Dan Durnel serves as farm manager and Louderback would someday like to have an in-house trainer.

Louderback’s mission is clear.

“Since I realized this a hobby and will never make money, my first goal is to have fun with a great hobby in which we do,” he said. “But my real goal is to produce offspring that help promote Extremely Hot Chips in the Open Classes. I love the 2 and 3-year old classes.”

And Extremely Hot Chips offspring are making quite the mark. In addition to siring the winners of both the Open and Limited divisions of the 2016 Congress Masters Western Pleasure, Suddenly Extreme, a 2011 sorrel stallion out of RL Saved By Impulse, earned a Reserve Congress Championship in the 3-Year-Old Western Pleasure Derby and a Reserve Championship in Western Pleasure Stakes Level 1 at the AQHA World Show. At the 2015 Quarter Horse Congress he placed third in Junior Western Riding and seventh in Junior Green Trail. That same year he was a unanimous Championship in Level 2 Junior Western Pleasure at the AQHA World Championship Show. At the time of his passing in November, Suddenly Extreme had 414 AQHA performance points in Western Pleasure, Trail and Western Riding and $50,156 in NSBA earnings.

Extremely Hot Chips foals dominated the 2016 Western Pleasure Super Sires 3-Year-Old Non-Pro classes held at the 2016 Tom Powers Futurity in Berrien Springs, Michigan. The winner of the Limited Division was Decidedly A Diva, ridden by Aubrey Alderman and Reserve was Huntin For Faith, ridden by Sarah Elizabeth Carr. There was a tie for first place in the Open Division between Extreme Moonlite, ridden by Becky Galyean, and Extremely Good Stuff, ridden by Nancy Wilkerson-Ditty.

In all, Extremely Hot Chips offspring have recorded a total of 1,422 AQHA points, and over $158,000 in National Snaffle Bit Association earnings.

Extremely Dark Chips and Mike Hawkins

In 2016 Extremely Dark Chips, a 2012 brown gelding out of Love It In The Dark, was Champion Breeders Championship Futurity 4 to 6-Year-Old  Intermediate Open Western Pleasure and Reserve Amateur Western Pleasure at the NSBA World Show; AQHA Reserve World Champion Level 2 Junior Western Pleasure; Top 10 in both the Limited  and Open divisions of the Non-Pro Western Pleasure Maturity. Extremely Dark Chips is owned by Randy Hawkins and shown by Randy in open events and his daughter, Megan, in Non-Pro and Amateur events.

Extremely Hot Diva, a 2013 bay mare out of Good Southern Belle, owned by Stephanie Redus and shown by Taft Dickerson, won the 2016 Hylton Maiden 3-Year-Old & Over Western Pleasure at the Virginia Classic, earning over $30,000.

RJ Hot Machine is a sorrel AQHA/APHA mare out of Miss Hot Machine, owned by Jennifer Hagen. She won the Amateur Longe Line at the 2016 American Paint Horse Association World Championship Show, with Jennifer’s husband, Donald, on the line. RJ Hot Machine was also the APHA Congress Champion in both Open and Non-Pro Longe Line.

Shes Sleepin Single is a 2013 mare, owned by Debbie Gerber and trained and shown by Justin Britton. Shes Sleepin Single is the 2016 Appaloosa Horse Association World Champion 3-Year-Old Western Pleasure Champion and was the Appaloosa Pleasure Horse Association Open 3-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Western Maturity Reserve World Champion.

Whiskey In The Dark, a 2013 sorrel gelding out of I Like Itin The Dark and owned by Kim Portney, was Reserve Champion in the 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure at the 2016 Sun and Surf Circuit and placed fourth in the 3-Year-Old Limited Open Western Pleasure; and ninth in the 3 & 4-Year-Old Open Trail. At the Oregon Futurity Whiskey In The Dark was Reserve in both the 3-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure and 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure; and Reserve Champion in Open 3-Year-Old Junior Green Trail.

Louderback said that when he was in the process of purchasing Extremely Hot Chips, Bret Parrish told him that the young stallion has a strong topline, tall withers, is very straight and that he marks this on his offspring.

“My foals have the same characteristics,” he said.

Louderback loves watching his stallion’s offspring excel in the show arena but he says Extremely Hot Chips is not yet finished as a show horse.

“Every year I get those looks and comments – ‘really Russ you are showing him – what does he have to prove?’ And then – ‘have you lost your mind?’”

But Louderback sees it this way ….

“Honestly no stallion owner is making any real money,” he said, “so I am going to ride him.”

Louderback said 2017 will be his last year in the show ring and he wants it to be a special year – a farewell year.

“I will absolutely show him in the Amateur in 2017 for the last time and he will likely be shown in the Open if I can find the right combination. Nick Mayabb wants to take him in Western Riding and that may be a future option. But right now we want to finish strong in Pleasure.”

Extremely Hot Chips is standing the 2017 breeding Season at Joan Schroeder’s Kiowa Ranch, 15 miles southeast of the old Schroeder Ranch in Gainesville, Texas. Schroeder, who has been involved in the breeding business for over 20 years also stands Extremely Hot Chips’ sire, Blazing Hot. She said Extremely Hot Chips has the kind, yet fun personality of Blazing Hot.

“He is a showoff,” she said. “The more you laugh at him during turnout/playtime, the more he entertains.”

His stud fee this year is $2,250 with incentives offered for Multiple mares/same owner, World Champion and World Champion producing mares. He is enrolled in the Western Pleasure Super Sires program, the AQHA Incentive Fund, the NSBA BCF, Tom Powers Triple Challenge, Southern Belle Breeders Congress/World and the APHA Breeders Trust and the Premier Quarter Sires.   A breeding has also been donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation/Gallops 2017 Annual Charity Stallion Services Auction in which online and telephone bidding will take place starting at noon, Sunday, Jan. 29.
