Angelik Gallitzendoerfer’s took a fancy to a loud overo yearling filly at 2012 Farnam Breeders’ Trust Select Yearling Stakes Sale, and longtime dream of showing in the APHA World Show began.
The German horse trainer was visiting the States last year when she won a bid of $5,500 for Paint Me Really Fancy. Not only did she aim to show the filly in the 2013 APHA World Show but also in the $50,000 Farnam 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Stakes.
“I’ve always wanted to show at this world show ,” she said.
Before returning home to Memmingen, Germany, where she trains and breeds Paints at Chrom Ranch, Angelik left “Fancy” with trainer Steven Stephens in Weatherford, Texas.
“She stayed here in the States the whole year, and was started and trained here,” she said. “But beginning of September, I did all of the training on my own.”
Angelik stayed with friends at DJ Quarter Horses in Klondike, Texas, while she trained Fancy.
“They invited me to stay with my horse over those two months because it’s difficult to stay in a hotel for that much time,” she said.
Fancy, who is by R Big Time Fancy and out of Page Me Zippo by Paint Me Zippo, was a pleasure for Angelik to work with.
“She’s very personated, but also very sweet and kind,” she said.
The Farnam 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Stakes on Nov. 9 was a first for both Fancy and Angelik—the first show for Fancy and the first big U.S. show for Angelik.
“We were both so nervous,” Angelik said with a laugh. “But I was so proud of her and how she did.”
The pair placed 10th in the class and will show again on Thursday in the 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure world show class and in the Gold/Silver 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Breeders’ Futurity, which is the last class of the APHA World Show on Saturday.
“After she’s finished with the show, she will fly to her new home in Germany,” Angelik said. “I’ll show her there and then hopefully breed her when she’s a 4- or 5-year-old.”
It will be at least a couple of years before Angelik buys another Farnam Breeders’ Trust Select Sale yearling but she hopes to do it again.
“It’s just too difficult to stay such a long time away from home, and I have a business, so I’ll have to wait,” she said. “But this is such a great idea and such a good thing for the young pleasure horses.”
