Jay Starnes and Zip By Machine win the Hylton Maiden 3-Year-Old & Over Western Pleasure.
For the second year in a row, a horse bred and raised by Ray Burkhart of Knoxville, Tennessee, walked away with the big check at the Hylton Maiden 3-Year-Old & Over Western Pleasure Slot Class held at the Virginia Classic Quarter Horse Circuit in Lexington, Virginia.
Jay Starnes rode Zip By Machine, a 2010 bay stallion by A Good Machine and out of Zip Zipa Rageous to a win in this year’s event, earning a paycheck for $15,000. Last year Jay’s wife, Kristy, won the same class aboard Zippn Hot Machine, a 2009 sorrel mare by A Good Machine out of Shes A Deuce Coupe.

At the conclusion of the Hylton Novice class the Virginia Quarter Horse Youth Association announced the winners of its “Pie In The Face Contest.” For a $5 donation to the youth, anyone in attendance could register a vote for their favorite (or not so favorite) person to receive a pie in the face. Votes were accumulated throughout the show circuit and the person or people with the highest number of votes were “honored” with a pie in the face. Jay Starnes, the class winner, was one such lucky victim. His client, Gavin Rawlings of Australia, did the honors.
