All great dreams start with a dreamer

Livingston_Janis2013_01_228What do you get when you take an industry legend, a five star, state-of-the-art facility  and world class breeding?

A dreamer.

Dale Livingston of Boerne, Texas is introducing Im A Platinum Dream, a 2010 gray stallion by Huntin For Chocolate and out of multiple American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Superior and World Champion producer, Ima Bodacious Dream.

“This, in my opinion, is probably the best offspring she’s had,” says Livingston, referring to the stud’s dam, owned by a long time friend and client of Livingston, Wayne Wilkerson, of La Plata, Maryland. While he is in training with Livingston, the stud is owned by Platinum Trust.

Standing at 16.1 hands, he’s a full brother to Huntin Big Dreams, 2012 AQHA Open Junior Pleasure World Champion, 2013 Senior Pleasure Reserve World Champion, and NSBA World Champion Junior Pleasure horse.

Entering his 4-year-old year, Livingston is ready to make a legend out of “Dreamer.” Injured as a 2-year-old, the stud is a bit of a late bloomer, but Livingston says he’s pleased with the delay.

“It is an old horse trainer’s dream, to be able to just do a horse the way you wanna do it,” he explains. He has full faith in the horse’s potential and ability and is relieved that he can work at the horse’s pace.

Livingston will be the stud’s primary showman in the Western Pleasure this year, while Scott Jones will saddle up for the Hunter Under Saddle.

As for future goals for the stallion, Livingston also plans to show him in the Western Riding and Trail.

Im A Platinum Dream will also be breeding throughout his career, but Livingston says he will be closed to the public. Rather, he will hand select the right cross to get the most successful foal. He has no interest in competing with the other breeding farms. “The stud business is tough. I just really like my horse and I want to give him a chance to be a great sire,” he says.

The stallion already has three test foals on the ground and another 20 on the way. “The babies are just incredible.”

And the now 60-year-old should know. Entering the industry at the age of 14, as a stall cleaner, he’s climbed the ladder to become one of the legends.

He’s also an AQHA and NSBA judge and was the 2007 AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year.

“I was an Air Force brat,” Livingston says of himself. “So my only chance to be around horses was to work at a barn. I can’t remember not wanting to be around a horse.”

Livingston dropped out of high school to pursue his dream and began his career in the Reining horse industry, working for industry icon, Bob Loomis, for seven years.

“I really have had a dream life. I’ve done a lot of stupid stuff along the way, don’t get me wrong,” he jokes. “But the horses really have been unbelievably good to me.”

He’s had the opportunity to travel the world, judging the European and Brazilian Championship of American Quarter Horses, all divisions of the AQHA World Shows, and the Congress on multiple occasions.

“I’ve never had a job, I’ve been doing what I wanted to do all my life.”

DDR Main BarnHe now trains and coaches out of Double Diamond Equestrian Center, where he stands Dreamer.

“I’ve traveled all over the country and have worked out of a lot of different places, but I’ve never seen any place like this,” Livingston insists.

The facility accommodates multiple trainers of a variety of disciplines, there’s a full breeding facility with an on-site embryo transfer specialist, Dr. Kurt Zermulin.

The facility also features a 110-by-200 foot indoor arena, three hot walkers, four round pens, eight cross-tie grooming stalls, wash stalls with hot and cold water, turnout paddocks and shelters, grass pastures and lakes.

To accommodate clientele and boarders, there are two large tack rooms with tack lockers, an air-conditioned lounge and kitchen in the back of the main barn. Ranch offices are located at the front of the barn for easy access to associates and administrators. Above these offices is one of the highlights of the facility. An air-conditioned banquet room with a commercial kitchen and a cocktail bar and lounge area overlooking both the indoor arena and the Hill Country landscape.

The facility has become somewhat of a family affair. Livingston’s wife, Melinda, started managing the place about six years ago and is now the Executive Director of Operations. Their daughter, Bobbie Jean, also works in the administrative department as the Office Manager.

“It’s a cool place to go work everyday,” says Livingston.

He’s living the dream life with his Dreamer. “I’ve had my hands on a lot of good horses over the years and this is the best horse I’ve ever had,” he explains. “He’s a really classy horse.”

The two seem to have quite the connection. This horse has a special place in the long-time trainer’s heart. “When I walk in the barn, he nickers.”

Though Dreamer will be closed to the public, Livingston is always happy to talk horses. Contact him on his cell phone at (972) 839-9180. To see this magnificent facility he calls an office, visit Double Diamond Equestrian Center at ddequestrian.com or at 415 Highway 46 West, Boerne, Texas 78006.
