Without even realizing it at first, Patti Cerio of Bainbridge, New York found her once-in-a-lifetime horse in Lopin Lazy, a 2010 bay overo APHA Stallion by Lazy Loper. In the last two years, “Beamer” has realized accomplishments in the show arena that Patti had never dreamed of and is continuing on his successful path by standing the 2015 breeding season at Pine View Farms in North Lawrence, Ohio.
After growing up showing Paints, Patti took a break from horses for many years until after she had her son and decided to show in amateur competition for a few years. Although a knee injury soon prohibited her from riding, she always kept a horse.
“Beamer came along when I did not have a horse in training, I only had my broodmare,” she explains. “I knew about him as he was raised by a good friend of mine. I had seen baby pictures of him all along. Judy brought him to a show in August of his yearling year just to get him out and that was the first time I saw him out.”
Raised by Judy Brooks, Beamer was out of her great broodmare, R Fancy This who is an APHA World and Reserve World Champion producer with babies like Invite This, Its All Krymsun, Krymsunized and Lazadaisical.
Besides his royal bloodlines, Beamer’s great color and legs coupled with his size and strength were all qualities that Patti liked about him from the start.
“There were not many colored studs out there at the time by Lazy Loper,” she explains. “When I bought Beamer, I bought him with the idea that I would get him trained up and shown and he would not stick around long. It never entered my mind that we would own and stand a great stallion like Lopin Lazy, but it has been a fun ride and great ride!”
Under the guidance of Wade Parks Show Horses in Colbert, Georgia, Beamer has proved to be a very versatile stallion with a successful career in multiple events. This year, he was crowned the APHA Reserve World Champion in Junior Western Pleasure with Wade Parks; the Reserve World Champion Amateur Aged Stallion with Patti showing and the APHA Reserve World Champion Aged Stallion lead by JT Mitchell. He was the 2013 APHA Honor Roll Western Pleasure Stallion, APHA Honor Roll Winner in Green Western Pleasure and 3-Year-Old Western Pleasure as well as the APHA Reserve Honor Roll Western Pleasure Horse in the nation.
Beamer was the 2013 APHA World Show Champion in the Breeders Trust Futurity, the 2013 APHA Reserve World Champion in 3-Year-Old Western Pleasure and the 2013 NSBA Champion 3-Year-Old Western Pleasure Futurity at the APHA World Show. He also finished his Superior in Green Western Pleasure and Western Pleasure as well as his Register of Merit awards in Green Hunter Under Saddle and Hunter Under Saddle.
“Beamer went to Parks Show Horses late in his 2-year-old year. Wade has trained and shown Lopin Lazy to all his wins. Carly Veldman Parks rides Beamer in Hunter Under Saddle and is training him in the Trail,” Cerio says. “Wade Parks has been very instrumental in Beamer’s sucess. They are a team. I have to give credit for Beamer’s success to Parks Show Horses- Wade and Carly have done a great job with him.”
According to Parks, Beamer’s great mindset and quiet nature have really made him easy to train and show.
“He is one of the quietest stud horses. He’s just a big, nice horse who doesn’t care about anything. He’s just a good guy,” he says. “Beamer also wants to be a show horse. When he walks in the pen, it’s almost like he knows what he’s doing. He swells up a little bit and gets almost cocky about it. He shows with a great top-line and great expression. He’s really a cool horse to show.”
In fact, this year Beamer came out of the breeding shed on a Friday and went right to the horse show on Tuesday where he won the Junior Western Pleasure on Thursday and Sunday. In only five shows this year, Beamer is currently sitting in the top five in the nation in the Western Pleasure.
“It’s really fun to walk him around at a show because he draws crowds of people. I have found myself pushing the people back off of him who want to see him and touch him,” Parks chuckles. “To me he is what a stud horse should be, a strong animal who is pretty and good minded that can advance the breed.”
Standing his first year at Harris Paint Farms in Federalsburg, Maryland, Beamer bred 45 mares and his first babies are expected to hit the ground in January.
“I am really excited about his babies coming,” Parks explains. “I have the very first one due out of one of my mares. Beamer’s mother has been a great producer. I have ridden many babies out of her and they have all made show horses.”
When Parks was approached by Pine View Farms managers, Roger Landis and Debbi Trubee about standing Beamer for the 2015 season along side his father, Lazy Loper it was quite an opportunity.
“It’s just amazing to me. I don’t think Pine View has ever had a Paint stallion to stand before. Roger and Debbi do a really great job of marketing and promoting the horses there,” he says. ” I am also a great fan of the Lazys and it’s just really a cool deal!”
According to Trubee, Pine View Farms has been interested in getting more into the Paints. In looking for their first Paint horse to stand, Lopin Lazy was their obvious first choice.
“He is a really great individual,” she says. “He not only has a good daddy in Lazy Loper but he is out of a great mare, which is really where it is at for us. He has the right to be a breeding horse.”
Nominated to the Breeders Trust and NSBA, Beamer who is N/N on the Five-Panel Testing and OWLS N/O, will be standing for a fee of $1,500. For an early booking before Dec. 31, he will offered at $1,200 which includes a chute fee and multiple mare and proven producer discounts will be available.
And Patti can not wait to see what the future brings for Beamer and his offspring.
“I’ve had a lot of horses,”she recalls. “Beamer is so much more than I thought he would be. He’s my dream horse that just came along.”
