Tina Nygren Stetler and Tangerine Sky

On Thursday, in her first appearance at a Palomino World Show, Tina Nygren Stetler, of New Richmond, Wisconsin, won the five-entry Amateur Western Pleasure Driving with Tangerine Sky (Pikachu).

“He was so good for me,” Stetler said. “Pikachu took care of me. He really enjoys his job. He is a good trotter. He floats in the cart and makes it look effortless. He’s simply a gorgeous horse.”

Stetler is leasing Pikachu from her trainer Tina Langress, who said he got his cool name from his breeder, Suzanne Munns, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, who is also Langress’ client.

“She was planning to have foals all named for all the playing card characters from Pokemon,” Langress explained. “He was the first and a yellow boy so he became Pikachu. Peace Out Man is his sire so he had to habe a hippie name …. hence Tangerine Sky.”

Pikachu, who already had a World Championship title in Hunter In Hand, lives with Langress to keep his training up and is one of her lesson horses but she decided to lease him out this year and Stetler was the natural choice.

“Conveniently, Tina and I have been friends and neighbors for over 20 years and literally live across the stree from each other,” Langress said.

It turned out to be a good decision. Although she has never won a World Championship title in Driving, Stetler showed in the class 15 years ago with Alan Rieke, who taught her how to drive a horse and she showed TJ Mr Kool, who qualified for the AQHA World Show.

“I was so excited when I won,” she said. “I had tears and thought of my parents, who passed away several years ago. My dad loved the Driving and it was an honor to win with a nice group of horses.”

Reserve Champion in the Amateur Pleasure Driving was PS Gold Zipper, owned and shown by Maria Pohlabein, Edgewood, Kentucky.

Pikachu was Reserve Champion in the Open Western Pleasure Driving as well, with Langress in the cart. The champion in that class was The Royal Tease, owned and shown by Jason Perkins, Napoleon, Ohio.

In one of the largest classes at the show, Debbie Wall, of Tallassee, Alabama, and Ima Skippers Boy teamed to win the Amateur Hunter In Hand with 23 entries.

Wall, who said she has probably competed at all but one Palomino World Shows, purchased Ima Skippers Boy, sired by Skipper DI and out of Izzy Fine Asset, from her trainer, Steve Tidwell.

“I saw Steve ride him as a 2-year-old and we always thought he would make a great Hunter Under Saddle horse,” Wall said.

A good horse and determination helped Wall capture the Hunter In Hand Class this year.

“It (the class) shows the conformation side of the Hunter Under Saddle Class,” she said. “It’s popular because it counts for multiple Golden Horse Awards.”

Reserve Champion in the Amateur Hunter In Hand was This Kidds By Design, owned and shown by Sonya Richardson, Paradise, Texas.
