A fatal shooting at Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers World Airport Tuesday afternoon sent passengers seeking cover and resulted in a lockdown of the airport.

Police said the victim, identified as Michael Winchester, an employee of Southwest Airlines, was gunned down in a parking lot at the airport. Winchester was a former University of Oklahoma punter and the father of of Kansas City Chiefs long snapper, James Winchester.

A suspect in the shooting was later was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The American Quarter Horse Association is currently hosting its 2016 World Championship Show at Jim Norick Arena at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. Many competitors use Will Rogers World Airport traveling to and from the World Show.

Meghan Tierney, of Augusta, New Jersey, was traveling to Oklahoma City to compete in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle aboard her horse, Pretty Assets.  Pretty Assets already won a World Championship in Junior Hunter Under Saddle with Tierny’s trainer, Keith Miller in the irons.

“I actually was there about 20 minutes before they (the shootings) happened and I was totally alone at baggage claim (which I found strange),” Tierney said. “I left right before they occurred. I quickly got calls and texts from everyone asking if I was OK!”

Tierney said she had no idea what the shootings were over.

The airport used its Twitter account to initially announce that one Federal Prison Transfer flight was allowed to land Tuesday afternoon but all arrivals and departures are suspended until further notice.

“We are continuing to advise travelers, staff and visitors to shelter-in-place as the Oklahoma City Police Department investigates shooting incident on the airport property,” the announcement read in part.

Several airlines, including Southwest, are offering “flexible accommodations for passengers traveling through Oklahoma City” and the airport confirmed that all airlines at Will Rogers World Airport will be waiving change fees for travelers rebooking flights on Tuesday evening.

Police said late Tuesday that they expected the airport to be fully operational by Wednesday.

More than 4,920 entries from the United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa and the United Kingdom are competing through Nov. 19 for 99 World Championships and 83 Level 2 Championship titles at this year’s event.
