He rode her mama, Dark Jasmine, to a Quarter Horse Congress Championship and tonight Steve Reams, of Ellerbe, North Carolina, piloted The Dark Impulse, sired by RL Best Of Sudden, to a win in the Hylton Maiden 3-Year-Old & Over Western Pleasure Slot Class at the Spring Breakout/Dave Higgins Memorial Show in Lexington, Virginia.
The 2014 brown mare is owned by Susan Simms and earned $25,000 for the victory in the class. A total of 18 entered and 17 showed in the class judged by Greg Wheat, Jennifer Thompson, Rick Baker and Andrea Simons. The total purse for the class was $73,400 plus $5,000 in bonus money to the highest placing Limited and Intermediate riders.
“First and foremost, all the honor and glory to God because without him none of this would be possible,” Reams said after the placings were announced. “She’s a very special daughter of Dark Jasmine. Donnie and Taft Dickerson started her and put a lot of time in on her before I got her.”
Reams also gave thanks to Dark Jasmine’s owner Sue Ostrander for breeding The Dark Impulse; her owner, Susan Simms, for giving him the opportunity to ride her; and his family for all their love and support.
“I prepared her just like I did her momma before the Congress,” he revealed. “I let her sleep.”
Reams said he thinks the best thing about The Dark Impulse is her profile.
“She’s just so pretty on the rail,” he said.
Reams said The Dark Impulse will continue to be shown in Novice Horse events at all the major shows this year.
The Hyton Maiden 3-Year-Old & Over Western Pleasure class is made possible by the generous financial support of Cecilia Hylton, of Hylton Quarter Horses in Gainesville, Virginia. She introduced the class at the Reichert Celebration and moved it to her home state in 2011. It has been the highest paying Western Pleasure futurity class in the nation for the past several years.
Reserve Champion was Made My Way, a 2014 bay gelding by Machine Made and out of Promote Miss Chip, owned by the Clifford family and shown by Cody Parrish.,
