Final numbers are in for the 2016 Tom Powers Futurity and this year over $279,000 in cash alone was awarded in 47 classes. Tom Powers said entries were up by nearly 100 this year and that all checks have now been mailed.
“People wanted to show,” he said. “The fairgrounds staff made a great effort for us this year. The grass was mowed, mulch added and flowers planted. I think people know we are all trying our best to make their experience as fun as possible.”
“Believe it or not our biggest challenge was controlling the dust,” Powers said. “They put over 100,000 gallons of water on the pens.”
This year’s Yearling Sale drew a total of 85 entries. Those yearlings were microchipped
and will be eligible to return for next year’s Sale Stakes Class, which will have a guaranteed purse of $65,000.
“Our top 10 was way up as was our top 20 and top 25,” Powers said. “The average
was down to $11,200 from over $13,000 last year.”
Powers also recently announced that he will be adding a 3-Year-Old Open and Limited Western Pleasure Stakes Class for horses that went through the 2015 Yearling Stakes Sale at his Michigan futurity but did not show this year in the 2-Year-Old Stakes Class.
