Western RidingTwo new Amateur performance World Champions were crowned Tuesday at the AQHA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City.

Jeffrey Johns piloted Lopin For a Chex to a win in Western Riding and Rock County Kid rocked the Western Pleasure with T. Sharnai Thompson in the saddle.

Johns and Lopin For a Chex, a 2007 bay gelding by Lazy Loper and out of She Bee A Chex, marked a 227.5 to capture the win.

Robert D. Huver II, Green Bay, Wisconsin, and All But Sudden were the Reserve World Champion in Amateur Western Riding with a score of 226.5 and they were also the Level 2 Champions.

“Lazy is a very talented horse but you always have to stay one step ahead of him.” Johns says. “I knew if I could make it past the far end of the arena and down my line, I could finally take a breath.”

Johns, who shows under the guidance of Jim and Deanna Searles, also showed More Radical to a fifth place in the class with a score of 222.

“Western Riding is one of my favorite classes, the control you have to have and the feeling of being one with your horse is amazing,” Johns says.

WP WinnerLopin For A Chex will compete next week in Senior Western Riding and then will have a nice long break before showing at the Sun Circuit early next year, Johns says.

Tuesday evening’s featured events started with the finals of Amateur Western Pleasure. The 15 finalists were evaluated by Steve Heckaman, Mike Hay, John Dean, Kelly McDowall and Mike Carter.

Thompson, of Pilot Point, Texas, topped off a successful show season by capturing the top spot in the class aboard Rocky County Kid, a 2011 bay gelding by Good I Will Be and out of JDZ Madison County, bred by Rita Crundwell.

“Rocky is definitely becoming one of my favorite horses,” Thompson says. “He always gives me his all every time he steps into the show pen.”

Rock County Kid will compete in Level 1 Western Pleasure Stakes next week and then, after a much-deserved break, Thompson says he will begin his all-around career.

“I’ve waited a long time for a horse like Rocky,” she says, “and I’m going to sit back and enjoy him.”
