NSBA crowns new World Champions, BCF winners

Competition continues at the National Snaffle Bit Association’s 13th Annual World Championship Show and Breeders Championship Futurity, in Tulsa, Oklahoma this week.

On Monday in Western Pleasure action, VodkaMadeMeDoIt and Erin Lieurance captured a win in the 10-entry BCF 2-Year-Old Intermediate Open Western Pleasure earning $1,262.03. The bay mare is sired by RL Best Of Sudden out of Hocus Pocus Princess and is owned by Tanna Petersak.

In other Western Pleasure competition, Ashley Lakins piloted RR Magical Moonlite to a win in the 12-entry Maturity Intermediate Open Western Pleasure for owner Dennis and Debbie Martin, Beaver, Ohio. Blair Townsend teamed with KM Suddenly So Easy to win the Open Western Pleasure Maturity among 15 entries. Aaron Moses mode Moonrageous to victory in the Green Western Pleasure for Starland Ranch. And Kristen Galyean captured to top spot in Amateur Western Pleasure aboard VS Lady In Red in a tough class of 17 entries. That same team won $1,881.77 for winning the seven-entry BCF 4 to 6-Year Old Intermediate Non-Pro Western Pleasure. Marilyn Masterson bested 26 other entries to win the Amateur 50 & Over Western Pleasure aboard KM WeKnowShesHot. That same team earned $1,337.82 for winning the 17-entry BCF 4 to 6-Year-Old Intermediate Non-Pro Western Pleasure. Kristen Galyean rode VS The First Lady to a win in the 3-Year-Old Intermediate Non-Pro Western Pleasure, earning a check for $1,182.30.  Halle Baldwin rode Lope With Grace to a win in the 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure, collecting $1,182.30. Aaron Moses piloted Heart Stoppin to a win in the 13-entry Open division of the BCF 2-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure for Voge Quarter Horses, Whitesboro, Texas, earning $1,757.83.

In Hunter Under Saddle action –  Just Kruzin captured the Green Hunter Under Saddle World Championship title with Dawn Baker in the irons for Jennifer Nicole Bennett, Oregonia, Ohio. Beth Case logged a win in Junior Hunter Under Saddle aboard Hubbout A Dance for Highrange Ranch. Woo Hoo earned a win in the BCF Color 2-Year-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle, with Calli Rouse in the irons for owner Angela Finnegan, Forest Grove, Oregon. Farley McLendon piloted Sleep ALilbit Longer to a win in the Maturity Open Hunter Under Saddle and Sarah Simons won the Maturity Limited Open Hunter Under Saddle aboard Biggest Show In Town for owners Gary and Tammy Raak. Debbie Hodde, Brenham, Texas, collected $2,345.91 for winning the BCF 3-Year-Old Limited Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddleaboard Couture Blue Genes and another $1,707.82 for winning the Open Division of the class.

Performance Halter – Shes Boss E won the Performance Halter Mares with Jason Smith on the lead for S. Lynn Walker. Dinnero was the top Performance Halter Gelding. Owned by Gerald Fleisner, he was shown by John Boxell. Debbie Trubee’s 3-year-old, Makin Me Willy Wild was the Performance Halter Stallions, led by Tim Finkenbinder.

Showmanship – Rebecca Shayne Gilliam teamed with Chocolatey Special K to win the Walk-Trop Showmanship class of 14 entries. Allison Lee Travis, of Lexington, South Carolina, and Cool Lookin Lady bested 34 other competitors to win the Novice Youth Showmanship. Sydney Sargent, Paris, Kentucky and Been Bar Hoppin capture the top spot in the 13 & Under Youth Showmanship in a tough class of 16. Jacqueline Frimodt, North Bend, Washington, teamed with Designed To B Blonde to win the Color Youth Showmanship. The Youth Showmanship 14-18 was the largest Showmanship class of the show and when judging was finished Ellexxah Maxwell and Zips Bossy Chip were crowned champions.

Western Riding – Midnight Invitation carried Lauren Graves to a win in the 24 entry Novice Youth Western Riding and Emily Maul, Peaster, Texas claimed the top spot in Youth Western Riding aboard Hez Raising The Bar.

Horsemanship – Mallory Vroegh and Krymsun Belle were named World Champions in Youth Horsemanship 14-18 by scoring above 47 other contestants. Ella Petak, Rancho Palos Verdes, California and Getting Hot won the 45-entry Novice Youth Horsemanship. Caroline Fredenburg teamed with Ima Tuff Barpasser to claim victory in Youth Horsemanship 13 & Under and Giorgia Meadows and Wimpy Show Stopper won the Color Youth Horsemanship.

Big numbers in Trail – With 68 in Junior Trail, Bruce Vickery piloted Extremely Good Stuff to a win for owner Jeff/Garret Crivelli. Chrome on My Zipper won the 25-entry Color Senior Trail with Brynne Bassler in the saddle for owner Hillary Roberts, Pilot Point, Texas. Angela Wade and One Hot Drama Mama earned the top score in Amateur Trail, with 44 entries. Color Amateur 50 & Over Trail drew 10 entries with Toni Ward, Hacienda Heights, California and Good Cowboy Cassanova earning the championship title. Katherine Tobin and VS Game Changer earned $2,199.70 for their win in the 36-entry BCF 4 to 6-Year-Old Non-Pro Trail. Corbett Ryan, Winnetka, Illinois, and Ima Willy Good One won the Equestrians With Disabilities Supported Walk-Trot Trail Class and Levi Danforth, Albuquerque, New Mexico, teamed with You Bet Shez Invited to win the EWD Independent Rider Walk-Trot Trail.

Tuesday Action

On Tuesday, fresh off his win in the L2 Youth Western Pleasure at the AQHA Youth World Show, Brody Galyean won the 13 & Under Youth Western Pleasure here in Tulsa aboard Cool Poco Dot, a 2010 sorrel mare by LL Cool Bay and out of Poco Jina Jane.

“She is so good and easy to ride and show,” Brody said. “I love being at the shows, having fun.”

The son of the National Snaffle Bit Association’s first Million Dollar Rider, Gil Galyean, Brody has only been teamed with Cool Poco Dot this year. He said the class was tough but his horse performed well.

“When I was in the lineup after the class, I knew I had a good ride and seeing how the judges placed me I was happy,”he said.

Brody and Cool Poco Dot will next compete at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio in October.

“Hopefully I will get to show her again next year too,” Brody said.

In other Western Pleasure competition on Tuesday, Brody’s father, Gil Galyean, rode The Dark Impulse to victory in the very competitive 25-entry Maturity $10,000 Limited Horse Open Western Pleasurefor owner Joan Zelnio Living Trust, Jackson, Wyoming. Deanna Green rode UF Rockin The House to a win in the Maturity Intermediate Non-Pro Western Pleasure. Kari Craft, of Fairhope, Alabama, and Gone Viral, just a month or so out of the breeding shed, won the Maturity Non-Pro Western Pleasure. Hez Blazin Famous, owned by Marjorie Allen, Alrington, Washington won the 15-entry Color Green Western Pleasure with Tate Oakley in the saddle. Rusty Green piloted John Simon to victory in the Color Senior Western Pleasure for Charla Bradshaw in a tough class of 17. Cody Caliendo collected $1,218.47 for winning the BCF Color 2-Year-Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure with Zensational. $1,638.64. Aaron Moses rode Lope With Grace to a win in the BCF 3-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure class with 10 entries, collecting $1,760.37 for BS Quarter Horses, Boerne, Texas. Kristen Galyean rode her mare, VS The First Lady to a win in the BCF 3-Year Old Intermediate Non-Pro Western Pleasure with 15 entries, earning $1,195.47. She collected another $2,364.67 for winning the Open Division of that same class. A Cool Beat carried Vincent Jr Scileppi, of Haddam, Connecticut, to a win in the 17-entry Novice Youth Western Pleasure. HereIComeAgain and Taylor Searles, Scottsdale, Arizona, won the Youth Western Pleasure 14-18. Samantha Ihde, Dana Point, California, teamed with Moonlit Hotrodder to win the Maturity Limited Non-Pro Western Pleasure. Lazy Way Around, owned by Barbara Williams, collected a paycheck for $1,660.17 for winning the 14-entry BCF 2-Year-Old Limited Open Western Pleasure, with Kaitlin LeBlanc in the saddle.

Trail – Trail numbers continued to stay strong on Tuesday with Youth Trail 14-18 drawing a total of 50 entries. Emma Brown, Zanesville, Ohio, and Some Hot Potential walked away with the World Championship title.

“This is my fourth NSBA World Show with Brett (Some Hot Potential),” Brown said.“Two years ago, in 2016 I won the Youth Trail with Brett in the same class that I won this year. I also won the Novice Youth 14-18 Horsemanship in 2016.”

Brown, who just finished competing at the AQHA Youth World Show said that while the Trail pattern at the NSBA World Show did not have the same level of difficulty as the one at the AQHA Youth World Show, there were many challenges.

“I had to remember to that I needed to make things pretty and try to plus as many maneuvers as possible because more people were able to get though the pattern today with it being less difficult,” she said. “I felt like the best part of my pattern was my back through because I got through it really smooth and quickly which helped me plus that specific obstacle. I also felt like our lope overs were something that we really excelled in. He was really good for me, so I was very happy with him.”

Emma Brown and One Hot Potential

The trot serpentine was definitely what Brown was most concerned with on the course.

“It’s really hard to get all of the correct feet on that so that was definitely the most difficult part of the pattern for me today,” she said.

Brown has had Brett for three years now and she said she loves his honestly.

“I love how honest he is in the arena. He loves to do his job and he is just so lovable,” Brown said. “He loves any treat you will give him.”

After competing at the NSBA World Show Brown left to start her freshman year at Auburn University, where she will compete on the Equestrian Team. She says she will like miss Brett the most.

“I love spending time with him and hanging out with him,” she said. “He would be best described as my best friend. He’s definitely going to be the hardest thing to say goodbye to going to school and I look forward to showing him in the amateur.”

In other Trail action, Novice Youth Trail drew a total of 44 entries and when the scores were tallied, Hez A Croud Pleaserand Lily E Anderson, Ottumwa, Iowa, were declared the winners. In Novice Youth Trail, Jayna Lagace, Higganum, Connecticut, piloted Huntin Hotty Tottysto a win in the 23-entry class. Check Required helped Rebecca Figueroa, Ocala, Florida, win the 13-entry Color Youth Trail.

Hunter Under Saddle – Brian Isbell piloted Al Bet Ur Two Faced to victory in the 14-entry Color Junior Hunter Under Saddle for owner Megan East Hogan, Bountiful, Utah. Shesa Hot Selection, owned by Sunni Chernega Duke, Austin, Texas won the Color Senior Hunter Under Saddle with Jamie English in the irons. Abigail Berry, Zionsville, Indiana, piloted Me Myself And Sky to a win in the Novice Youth Hunter Under Saddle with 22 entries. Isabella D’onofrio, Columbus, Ohio, teamed with N A Heartbeat to win the Youth Hunter Under Saddle 13 & Under class of 10 entries. Taylor Searles and Best Jazz Album Yet won the Youth Hunter Under Saddle 14-18 with 27 entries. Carrie Ann Warren – Summerfield, North Carolina, collected a check for $1,069.88 for winning the BCF 4 to 6-Year-Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle with Sleep ALilBit Longer, owned by Farley McLendon. Hez A Dancin Hubba earned $1,757.83 in the 16-entry BCF 2-Year-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle with Beth Case in the irons for owner Chris Lagerbalde. Case also piloted Couture Blue Genes to a win in the BCF 3-Year-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle for owner Debbie Hodde. That same team also collected another $1,547 for winning the 3-Year-Old $1,000 Novice Horse Open Hunter Under Saddle. In the 17-entry BCF Color 3 to 6-Year-Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle, Sunni Chernega Duke piloted Shesa Hot Selection to a win and a check for $1,003.20.

Equitation – Victoria Leen, Seabeck, Washington, and Im Seein Double won the Novice Youth Equitation in a tough class of 26. A total of 11 competed in the Youth Equitation 13 & Under and when the judging was complete HF Krymsun EleganceAnd Evelyn E Doles, Saint Louis, Missouri, were named champions. In the 14-18 Division, GW Jack Bar and Harley K. Huff – Evansville, Indiana, bested 28 other entries to log the win.

Longe Line – This Dollys Rockin collected $1,042.30 for winning the 15-entry Limited Non-Pro Western Longe Line with Chelsea Engo, Austin, Texas, at the end of the line. Nancy Wilkerson and The Best Cowgirl won the Open Division of the Non-Pro Longe Line, among 18 entries and collecting $1,176.50. Wilkerson and The Best Cowgirl also collected a check for $2,014.06 for winning the BCF Non-Pro Western Longe Line class of 22 entries. Alyse Roberts showed The Peace Movement to a win in the Open Hunter Longe Line for owner Donna Shirey, Ocala, Florida. They also collected $1,483.69 for winning the BCF Open Hunter Longe Line.

Horsemanship – Sixteen competed in the Equestrians With Disabilities Walk-Trot Horsemanship for Independent Riders and at the completion of judging Spencer Roberson and Fine Details were declared winners.

Walk-Trot – Logan Starnes rode Certainly Flatlined to a win in the 16-entry Youth Walk-Trot Western Pleasure. Rebecca Shayne Gilliam,  Greensburg, Indiana, and Chocolatey Special Kclaimed victory in the 16-entry Youth Walk-Trot Trail. Makenna Harrison, Jamestown, Indiana and This Cowgirls Lopin earned a World Show title in Youth Walk-Trot Horsemanship by outscoring 13 other competitors.

Wednesday Competition

On Wednesday, Sarah Roscitti won the Breeders Championship Futurity 2-Year-Old Limited Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle aboard Easy On The Eyez, a bay stallion by Protect Your Assets that her family raised.

“I foaled him out, broke him and have done all the training myself,” she said. “We actually bred and raised his mother so it’s a really special win for us.”

Roscitti said there are several qualities that set Easy On The Eyez apart.

“He’s so good minded. That is his strongest point,” she explained. “And he has both gears.”

Roscitti said she was pleased with her horse’s performance in the class.

“In the line-up I was happy with my ride,” she said. “I wanted him more locked in to the left, but this was his maiden voyage!”

In other Hunter Under Saddle action Wednesday, Dawn Baker piloted Without Permission to a win in the Color 3-Year-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle. Rebekah Kazakevicius, Ocala, Florida, teamed with Maid Me Good to win the BCF 2-Year-Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle, collecting $1,682.70n in the 10-entry class. Shesa Hot Selection logged yet another win on Wednesday in the 15-entry BCF Color 3 to 6-Year-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle, with Jamie English in the irons. The win paid $1,108.81. Brian Isbell piloted Smooth Details to a win in the BCF 3-Year-Old Limited Hunter Under Saddle class of 25 entries. Smooth Details is owned by John and Buddy Henn Lorton, Noblesville, Indiana and earned $2,580.50 for the win. Mito Been Me and Janae Walker, Pepperell, Massachusetts, teamed to win the BCF 4 to 6-Year-Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle, earning $1,952.63. Sketchie Details won the BCF 4 to 6-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle with Allison Clark McDonald in the irons for owners Nicole/Donald Kuklinski earning $2,011.76.

Equestrians With Disabilities – Martha Jo Wallace, Baxter Springs, Kansas, and Consider Me Smooth, teamed to win the EWD Showmanship class of 14 entries. Corbett Ryan and Dontsassthismachinewon the EWD Walk-Trot Western Pleasure for Supported Riders. Evan Zaloudek and Cuiton All Deckedout won the 16-entry EWD Walk-Trot Western Pleasure for Independent Riders.

Much of Wednesday’s competition was centered around the Trail classes which again drew huge numbers.

Shannon Vroegh piloted Im Hott Your Nott to a unanimous win in the Breeders Championship Futurity 3-Year-Old Trail Class of 35 entries, taking home a check for $2,815.09. Sired by VS Code Red and out of Some Sweet Machine, “Rudy” placed fourth in the Farnam 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Stakes Class at the APHA World Show in 2017.

“I started playing with Trail on him after that and by the end of his 2-year-old year he was doing a full course,’ Vroegh said. “He is a very special horse.”

Vroegh was pleased with Rudy’s performance on Wednesday.

“We had a great ride,” she said. “We hit all over our spots and I was very excited when I came out of the pen.”

Shannon’s daughter, Mallory Vroegh placed fourth on Im Hott Your Nott in Color Youth Trail earlier in the week, before heading off to start her freshman year at Southern Methodist University, where she will be a member of the school’s Equestrian Team.

In other Trail action, Jennifer Paul and Lazyboy took top honors in the 4 & 5-Year-Old Open Trail class of 66 entries. Dr. Lori Lord and KM Jazz It Up bested 44 other competitors to earn a World Championship title in Novice Amateur Trail. Hillary Roberts and Chrome On My Zipper won the 15-entry Color Amateur Trail. Katherine Tobin, Scottsdale, Arizona, and VS Game Changer fought off 50 other competitors to win the Amateur 50 & Over Trail. Hayley Kittler rode the Champion and Reserve Champion in the BCF 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Trail. A Very Simple Dream collected $2,252.07 for the win and Good To Be Expensive earned $1,689.05 as Reserve Champion. Memphis Bound bested 75 other entries to win the BCF 4 to 6-Year-Open Trail with Jess Bergantzel in the saddle for owner Koleene Herlocker, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Memphis Bound earned $4,294.66 for the win.

Western Riding – A total of 14 competed in Color Open Western Riding and when the scored were tallied Fascination Sensation, owned by Georgia Vernal, Raleigh, North Carolina, and shown by Shannon Gillespie, were declared the winners. Laina Banks and Strawberri Wine won the Novice Amateur Western Riding class with 34 entries. Elis A Sleepin and Kirstin Thomsen, Nicolaus, California were the Amateur Western Riding World Champions among 17 contestants.

Theresa Wills and An Absolute Martini

Western Pleasure – Erin Lieurance piloted VodkaMadeMeDoIt to yet another win at the NSBA World Show on Wednesday – this time in the 2-Year-Old Intermediate Open Western Pleasure. VodkaMadeMeDoIt is owned by Tanna Petersak, LeRoy, Illinois. Aaron Moses and Heart Stoppin won the Open Division of the 2-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure. The bay stallion, sired by RL Best Of Sudden out of One Hot Mouse, is owned by Voge Quarter Horses. A total of 24 horses competed in the BCF 3-Year-Old Limited Open Western Pleasure and when the scores were tallied An Absolute Martini, owned by John McNichol, Hardwick, New Jersey, and shown by Theresa Wills, were declared the winners, taking home $2,028.79. Sara Simons piloted Zensational to a win in the BCF Color 2-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure class of 11 entries for owner Mc’s Dragon Ranch LLC,  Pilot Point, Texas. The win was worth $852.93. Taylor Searles logged another win aboard HereIComeAgain in the BCF 4 to 6-Year-Old Non Pro Western Pleasure class of 27 entries. HereIComeAgain is owned by Katherine Tobin and earned $2,143.94 for winning the class.

Longe Line – Kathie Kennedy showed How Do U Figure to a win in the Color Open Longe Line for owners Stanley and Susan Scott, of Ocala, Florida. They also collected $1,745.52 for winning the BCF Open Color Longe Line. A total of 16 entries competed in the classes which ran concurrently.

Judges for this year’s NSBA World Show, Breeders Championship Futurity and Show Your Colors show include: Sissy Anderson, Jon Barry, Kelly Boles Chapman, Buddy Fisher, Robin Frid, Clint Fullerton, Lori Gingrich, TW Grose, Derek Hanscome, Mike Hay, Steve Heckaman, Holly Hover, Debbie Kail, Ryan Kail, Will Knabenshue, John Kunkle, Clay MacLeod, Kim Myers, Scott Neuman, Dean Ross, Chris Thompson and Dan Trein.

Competition continues through Sunday at Tulsa Expo Square. A Yearling Sale, featuring some 90-plus youngsters enrolled in the NSBA Breeders Championship Futurity program, will be held on Friday, Aug. 17.
